Old town

The inner city area spans from Copenhagen Central Station to the historical Nyhavn harbour and is brimming with all kinds of shops, cafes and restaurants. Food lovers will be delighted by a trip to the Torvehallerne market by Nørreport Station. 'Strøget' is a 1.1 km long pedestrian district that stretches from the City Hall all the way to Kongens Nytorv square and Nyhavn. This area displays a high range of historical buildings and institutions such as the Christiansborg house of parliament, the Round Tower, Thorvaldsens Museum, Tivoli Gardens, the Black Diamond library but also plenty of modern galleries and cosy music venues.

The harbour area is ideal for leisurely walks. From here you can spot Trekroner Fort, view architect Henning Larsen's Opera House or experience the changing of the guard at Amalienborg Castle. Enjoy the breathtaking view from the Royal Danish Playhouse and, in summer, hang out on Ophelia Beach. Copenhagen is renowned for its variety of parks and gardens among these you will find, in the old town area, the pleasant Kings Garden, the Botanical Gardens or Østre Anlæg behind The National Gallery of Denmark.
